What is an AI agent?

And how is it different from a chatbot? A plain guide for business leaders.

In one line

  • An AI agent is software that takes actions to finish a task, not just answer a question.

The short definition

An AI agent is software that can understand a goal, decide on steps and take actions in your systems to complete a task. A chatbot answers; an agent does. It might resolve a support ticket, update a record or process a refund, end to end.

How an agent works

An agent connects to your tools and data, reasons about what needs to happen, and carries out the steps, with guardrails and human approval where the stakes are high. It runs on your real data, not a sandbox, and is monitored in production.

Where agents help

The best first agents handle high-volume, rule-based work: support replies, data entry, routing, reporting and status updates. They remove the repetitive 80% and leave the judgement calls to people.

Agent vs copilot

A copilot suggests and drafts while a person stays in control. An agent completes tasks on its own within set limits. Many teams start with a copilot and graduate the safe parts to an agent.
